Safety-valves.-A relief valve comprises a cylindrical body a closed at one end containing a piston valve c formed with a peripheral groove e and a pair of rings f, g. One end of the piston, which is loaded by a spring j, is provided with a rubber or leather washer d adapted to engage a seat b of smaller diameter than the cylinder. The cylinder wall has two series of holes h, i arranged so that as the valve moves towards its closed position the holes 1 are closed in advance of the holes h to allow pressure to leak to the back of the piston to enable the valve to close at an higher pressure than would be the case if the spring alone were relied on.
