Abstract

233,132. Thompson, C. W. April 30, 1924. Fluid - friction vibrationdampers. - A shock-absorber. primarily adapted for road vehicles, of the kind in which a valved piston operates in a cylinder is arranged so that more resistance is offered to the movement of the piston near both ends of the cylinder than when the piston is in intermediate or normal position. A trunk piston 33, provided with ports 30, is mounted on a piston-rod 22 which has a shoulder 23 and a valve member 31 freely movable between the head of the piston and the shoulder. The valve member may be of various forms and is adapted when the piston moves in one direction to close partially the ports 30. Mounted on a seating at one end of the cylinder and controlled by a spring 40 is an annular stop-member 38 with which the piston contacts towards the end of its up-stroke and partially closes the port 30, so resisting the movement of the piston. A ported stop member 36 is mounted on a spring 34 at the other end of the cylinder, which member contacts with the valve member 31 and by reason of its fitting closely the walls of the piston resists the continued down-stroke of the piston.
