Abstract

579,332. Valves; lubrication. HUNTER, M. C. I. Aug. 10, 1943, No. 12881. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine having cylindri cal inlet and ex haust valves 3, 4 arranged across the cylinder head 2 and provided with diametrical passages adapted to communicate with the cylinder 1 through ported pistons 5, 6 sliding in cylindrical apertures in the cylinder head 2 and adapted to be pressed into sealing contact with the valves by the pressure obtaining in the cylinder the valves are mounted in end bearings and their surfaces do not contact with the valve casing. The pistons may be formed wholly or partly of graphite or have graphite inserts adjacent the valves to provide lubrication, the valves also being lubricated by a spring pressed graphite bar or brush 18 or by oil fed through an inlet 17 on to a roller 16 disposed in a pocket adjacent the valve and making rubbing contact therewith.
