Abstract
933,583. Rotary I.C. engines. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. April 24, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 15547/62. Class 110 (2). In a rotary internal combustion engine of the Wankel type, a sealing strip 4 is located in an axially extending groove in a lobe of the piston 3 and is urged against the housing inner wall 5 by two springs 7, each acting through a piston 9. The pistons 9 are grooved to accommodate the sealing strip, and extend to the outer surface of the piston 3 so that gas pressure in the working chambers will oppose the action of the springs and, with a sufficiently high pressure in the working chambers, will move the pistons 9 inwardly so that the springs no longer act on the sealing strip. Such movement of the pistons 9 is hydraulically damped by liquid in the chamber 11, which communicates with cooling passages 13 through a small bore 12. The sealing strip is a loose fit in its slot to allow gas pressure to enter the slot and urge the strip against the wall 5. It is stated that the area of the pistons 9 and the stiffness of the springs 7 may be so adjusted that the force with which the strip 4 is pressed against the wall 5 is substantially constant.
