Abstract
938,827. Rotary engines and pumps. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G., and F. WANKEL. Aug. 23, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No. 30367/61. Addition to 892,476. Class 110 (2). The working chambers of a rotary I.C. engine of the Wankel type are sealed by a sealing strip 40, Fig. 5, in a groove in each apex of the rotor and by seals 56 in the end faces of the rotor. At the axial ends of the grooves in which the strips 40 are fitted are provided slotted bodies 80 which the end face seals 56 abut (see Fig. 5). The slots in the bodies are wedge shaped so that the strips 40 make line contact with them. The strips 40 and seals 56 are fitted with some clearance at 54 and 76 so that gas pressure may urge the sealing components against the engine casing. In another embodiment (Figs. 10 and 11) each body 80 is replaced by two slotted annular bodies 86<SP>1</SP> and 94, the outer body 94 having the same axial width as the seals 56, and being resilient so that expansion of the seals 56 can be accommodated. Another embodiment is described in which only one annular body is provided at the end of each apex groove. The invention may also be applied to fluid pumps and motors.
