Abstract

1494959 End-face rotary seals INGERSOLLRAND CO 21 Nov 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 47987/75 Heading F2B An end-face rotary sealing assembly comprises a rotary sealing element 22; a housing 16; and a fixed sealing element 24, the rotary sealing element 22 having a central bore, two parallel radial faces 36, 36<SP>1</SP>, one of which, 36<SP>1</SP>, forms a seal with the fixed sealing element 24, and a peripheral surface 34 with lobes 38, 40, Fig. 2, which engage with complementary surfaces 38<SP>1</SP>, 40<SP>1</SP> of the housing 16 in such a way as to prevent relative rotational movement, to allow relative axial freedom, and to provide a void (not shown) connecting the two radial faces 36, 36<SP>1</SP> of the rotary sealing element 32. The embodiment shows a machine 10, such as a gas compressor, incorporating two sealing assemblies of the invention, each with a threelobed sealing element 24 of, e.g. sintered titanium or tungsten carbide. The connection between the radial faces 36, 36<SP>1</SP> is provided partly by passages 20, 28 in the housing 16 and partly by radial clearance between the rotary sealing element 22 and the housing 16. It is said that the form of the sealing element 22 allows it to be reversed, and thus to double its working life.
