A rotary piston I.C. engine of the n and n+ 1 lobe type is characterized in that at least one piston end face 9a has axially movable end sealing strips 13 disposed in grooves 14 extending between adjacent radial seals (not shown), the end face having recesses 17 extending from the piston flanks 12 to the bottom of said grooves. As shown, to allow gas from the working chambers of the engine access to the space between groove surface 14a and sealing strip 13, recesses 17 are formed in the end face 9a of the piston 9.
