964,083. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. CLAYTON & BAMBER Ltd., and D. D. BAMBER. Jan. 30, 1961 [Jan. 28, 1960], No. 3061/60. Heading F1F. A rotary piston I.C. engine having n piston lobe and n + 1 casing lobes which may work on either the two or four stroke cycle, as shown comprises a three-lobed casing 1, Fig. 1, and a two-lobed eccentrically mounted rotor 2, wherein the rotor rotates in one sense about its own axis and in the opposite sense at twice the velocity about the casing axis, includes spring-loaded longitudinal sealing strips 12, Fig. 3, carried by the casing and annular sealing surfaces 21, formed on or carried on the rotor end faces to sealingly engage end plates carried by or forming part of the casing. As shown, one end plate comprises a pressure plate 16 urged by springs 17 to seal the rotor and faces with respect to the casing. The sealing surfaces 21 may be accurately machined on the rotor or separate parts securely attached to or shrunk on the rotor. Alternatively, the rotor parts on which the sealing surfaces 21 are attached may be given some freedom of movement by a "split skirt" form of piston construction. The parts on which the annular sealing surfaces are formed may be directly urged by springs into contact with the casing in which case the spring-urged pressure plate is dispensed with. Junction boxes 12a, Fig. 4 interconnect the sealing strips 12 and arcuate sealing members 18 received in slots 19. Lubricating oil is circulated through passages 2c.
