Abstract
943,492. Pistons. STEWART-WARNER CORPORATION. June 21, 1960 [June 22, 1959], No. 21748/60. Heading F2T. [Also in Division F1] A free piston engine comprises a cylinder with a bore therein and a piston freely reciprocable and independently freely rotatable in the bore and means for rotating the piston. As shown, an internalcombustion operated free piston engine has opposed pistons 16 and recesses 52 are formed in the pistons. The pistons are rotated by compressed gas (e.g. air) supplied to nozzles 58. The compressed air for the nozzles 58 may be derived directly or indirectly from the chambers 20. Rapid continuous rotation of the pistons is ensured. The gas forms films between the pistons and the cylinder surface which will in effect lubricate this surface. It is not necessary to have means for providing oil lubrication of the surface. The engine may be operated at higher temperatures than would be permissible if oil were employed. The space between each end wall 46 and the corresponding ports 38 and 40 constitutes a bounce chamber 48. The pistons may be made of lightweight material and may be made hollow in construction. Suitable ceramics or lightweight alloys may be employed in the pistons. The compression and combustion chambers could be interchanged (see also Division F1).
