Abstract
915,281. Free-piston gas generators. FIAT S.p.A. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 4205/61. Class 7(1) An opposed piston free-piston gas generator is formed with clearances 14, 16 provided between the compressor cylinders and the scavenging air chambers 17, 18 arranged around the engine cylinder. The engine cylinder is separated from the compressor cylinders by ports 2 fully open to the atmospheric air and situated in the engine cylinder wall exposed by the clearances the engine pistons being visible and accessible from the outside through the ports. A clearance 15 is also provided at the centre of the engine. The scavenging air chambers 17, 18 are interconnected by ducts not shown. Coolers 31 are provided for cooling the scavenging air. The various lubricating accessories for the engine cylinder may be accommodated by the clearances. As shown the scavenging air reservoir acts as a foundation for the engine and compressor cylinders.
