Abstract

1365105 Continuous combustion engine C HUBERS 25 Oct 1971 [29 Oct 1970] 49415/71 Heading F1B Continuous combustion engine has a burner in the cylinder head to which fuel is supplied continuously but at a rate which varies with the position and direction of movement of the piston. The piston 2 reciprocates within a cylinder 1, the cylinder head including a housing 8 partitioned by a wall 9 into a first chamber 10 and a second chamber 11 which are connected by narrow ducts 13. A burner 16 is positioned in chamber 10. An air reservoir 7 is connected to the cylinder by a duct 5, 6 which contains a non-return valve 4, and is also connected to the chamber 11 by a duct 19 which contains an engine-actuated valve 20. The flame from the burner is prevented from impinging on the piston crown by a guard plate 17 and by a ceramic coating 18 on the piston. Operation. At the end of the power stroke the piston uncovers exhaust ports 21 and air inlet ports 22. During the compression stroke, fresh air is forced into the reservoir 7 and passes to the chamber 11 under the control of the valve 20 to provide air for the burner 16 during the power stroke. Reservoir 7 is connected to chamber 11 by a duct 46 comprising a valve 45. In a modification the chambers 10 and 11 are situated inside the reservoir, and a blower may be provided to feed air to the chamber 11. In a further modification the engine is a rotary epicycloidal piston engine, the reservoir being filled from the part of the cylinder block in which compression occurs. The device may also be applied to a multi-stage expansion engine.
