Abstract
566,825. Valves and valve gear. GOBY, C. S., and KRAMER, F. May 25, 1943, No. 8319. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Each piston 36 of a radial engine operates in a sleeve 19 surrounded at its upper end by a ring 24, the sleeve and ring being reciprocated by rocker arms 20, 28, of which the latter are connected to the sleeve through rods 26 and studs 27. Each pair of rocker arms 20, 28 is pivoted at one end to a common shaft and actuated intermediate its ends by an eccentric 23, 30 on a shaft 8 driven at a quarter crankshaft speed through spur gears 3, 4, 6, 7, the gears 7 having balance weights for the rocker mechanism. Circumferential ports 19a, 19b, Fig. 5, in the sleeve 19 are spaced apart longitudinally, the ports 19a being brought in and out of register with the exhaust outlet 18 in the cylinder casing 10, while the lower ports 19b register alternately with the exhaust ports 18 and the inlet ports 17, as also do co-operating ports 24a in the ring 24. The sleeve 19 and ring 24 move for the greater part in the same direction. Packing rings 33, 35 in the cylinder casing 10 seal the ring and the sleeve.
