Abstract

495,541. Valves; valve gear. SAMPAIO, A. C. DE. March 18, 1938, No. 8411. [Class 7 (vi)] In a four-stroke engine, inlet and exhaust are controlled by the same ports 23 in a reciprocating sleeve valve 2, which may be the engine cylinder, a further reciprocating ring valve 4 connecting the ports 23 alternately to exhaust at 24 and admission at 25. The sleeve and ring valves are actuated respectively by cranks 16, 20, arranged one in advance of the other ; both cranks may be on the same shaft. Fig. 9 shows one form in which the ring valve is connected to its operating-crank by rods 39, 40 sliding in guides as shown. The ports in the sleeve valve may be tangential. When the sleeve valve constitutes the engine cylinder, the cooling-fins 37 may be formed thereon. In other forms, the rods 39, 40 may be connected by a lever pivoted on the cylinderhead ; or the rod 39 may be connected directly to the ring valve, the rod 40 being omitted. Both valves may have oscillating as well as reciprocating motion.
