503,988. Valves. - SAMPAIO, A. C. DE. Jan. 7, 1938, No. 524. [Class 7 (vi)] In a four-stroke engine, the cylinder 2 is reciprocated over a stationary head 4 so as to open ports 14 serving for both the exhaust and the admission of air, the outside of the ports 14 being exposed to a current of air. The cylinder or sleeve valve may be cooled by external ribs, or by being formed as a jacket through which cooling- fluid is circulated by telescopic, articulated, or flexible pipe connections. The ports 14 are tangential, and they may be longer at one side of the cylinder than the other, so that the exhaust commences at one side. The sleeve valve may be arranged between the piston and a stationary cylinder, and may have an oscillatory component of motion.
