Abstract

503,987. Valves; valve gear. SAMPAIO, A. C. DE. Jan. 7, 1938, No. 523. [Class 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine, the cylinder is reciprocated over a fixed cylinder head 4 so as to act as a sleeve valve, recessed ports 16 in the cylinder co-operating with inlet ports 15 in the head, and the cylinder exhaust ports 17 being controlled by the piston. The cylinder may be reciprocated by means of a lever 22 connected by rods 20, 21 to cranks 18 19 rotated in opposite directions, the former at engine speed, and the latter at twice that speed. In modifications, the cylinder may be actuated by a cam, either grooved or otherwise ; or it may be oscilltted as well as reciprocated. The cylinder or sleeve valve may be cooled by external ribs, or by fluid supplied to its hollow interior bytelescopic, articulated, or flexible pipes. The ports 16 in the sleeve valve may be tangential ; or they may be covered internally by a ring formed with staggered circular ports. The sleeve valve may work within a stationary cylinder, instead of itself forming the cylinder. It may also be made in two parts, the outer of which is made of a light antifriction alloy. The position of the inlet and exhaust ports may be interchanged. The part of the sleeve valve which works over the cylinder head may be of different diameter, or even eccentric, to the part in which the piston works.
