Abstract

158,532. Hult, C. A. Feb. 6, 1920, [Convention date]. Valve gear; valves.-In an engine having two annular pistons 4, 5 working in an annular cylinder, cams 14 on the shaft 19 have shaped surfaces to give two complete fourstroke cycles for each revolution of the shaft. The admission and exhaust are controlled by a sleeve 29, Figs. 1 and 4, surrounding the shaft and having a central flange 30 with two valve seating surfaces 31, 32. These surfaces bear on two spring- pressed sleeves 33, 34, whose movement is limited by flanges 58 on extensions 52 carried by the cylinder covers. The admission movement of the valve sleeve 29 is effected by the roller 46 on the shaft and projection 45 on the sleeve, the gas passing from the inlet 38 through the space 35 between the two sleeves 29, 33 and thence past the valve head to the combustion space 27; during this movement the sleeve 33 is stationary. The exhaust is effected similarly by the cam 49 and projection 48, the exhaust outlet being at the opposite side to the inlet. A hollow cylindrical slide valve surrounding the shaft may replace the beat valves above described, this valve being similarly actuated.
