Abstract
392,863. Valves ; valve gear. ARBLASTER, E. F., 26, 5th Avenue, Mount Lawley, Western Australia. Jan. 6, 1933, No. 499. [Class 7 (vi).] A sleeve valve 13 is given a combined rotary and reciprocatory motion by means of long oblique teeth 15 at its lower end engaging a worm 23, the shaft of which carries a crank 22 connected by a link 21 to a thrust collar 19 on the sleeve. The longitudinal movements of the sleeve cause also a to and fro oscillation about its axis owing to the obliquity of the teeth 15, which is superposed upon the rotation caused by the rotation of the worm 23. Thus when the sleeve is moving upwards there is practically no rotational movement, whereas when it is moving downwards the rotational movement is doubled. This latter rapid rotation is used for opening the exhaust ports. There may be four ports 14 in the sleeve registering with four inlet and four exhaust ports alternating around the cylinder. The worm 23 may be replaced by a pinion on a vertical axis.
