Four-stroke-cycle engines.-In an engine having an auxiliary piston 9 and a sleeve valve 10, both operated from a half-speed shaft 25, the auxiliary piston is so actuated that its descending movement is more rapid than its ascending movement. The sleeve ports 23, 24 are arranged to be covered by the auxiliary piston during combustion, and the sleeve valve is given a reciprocating motion of the same frequency as that of the auxiliary piston, but with a certain amount of advance and a longer stroke. The shaft 25 is offset from the centre line of the cylinder, for example to a distance equal to one-half of its crank arm, so as to give the quicker down-stroke of the auxiliary piston. On the contrary, the sleeve valve is given a quicker up-stroke than down-stroke by means of a link 16 connected to the auxiliary piston rod 14 and to a lever 28, which is fulcrumed at 30 and connected by a link 33 to the valve. The sleeve-valve ports 23, 24 control respectively exhaust at 13 and inlet at 12. In a modification, the link 16 is connected directly to the sleeve valve, which has a single port controlling inlet and exhaust ports at the same side of the cylinder.
