Two- and four-stroke -cycle engines; driving- gear.-Balancing of the inertia forces is effected by placing (1) at opposite ends of the engine shaft a pump and a compressor for a two-stroke Diesel engine, (2) a compressor at each end of the shaft for a four-stroke Diesel engine or using a twostage compressor for such an engine, the two stages being separated one at each end of the shaft. The pumps and compressors are of the piston type and the two parts are arranged with cranks at 180‹. The invention is applicable to two-stroke-cycle engines having one, two, four, five, 'or six cylinders and to four-stroke-cycle engines having one, two, or three cylinders.
