Regulating.-Four cylinders, or multiples of four, are disposed co-axially and in pairs on opposite sides of a central crank shaft driven by connecting-rods j carried by guide pistons h attached to crossheads e upon which are mounted the main pistons d. Pump charges are compressed in the common spaces k at the ends of the cylinders remote from the crank shaft, the charges being transferred to the combustion spaces c through ports x controlled by cam-actuated or other valves (not shown). Regulating may be effected by rejecting to the pumps portions of the cylinder charges during compression.
