441,666. Connecting-rods; pistons. MOGNE, L. DE, 11, Rue Des Damattes, Puteaux, Seine, France. May 25, 1935, No. 15333. Convention date, May 25, 1934. [Class 122 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] In an internal-combustion engine, cylinder clearance is adjusted, while the engine is operating, by altering the effective length of the connecting-rod. In Fig. 1 the rod comprises two parts 19<a>, 19<b> threaded together, the upper part being universally jointed to the piston, which is rotated by engagement of splines 24 thereon with teeth 25 on a member 26, itself rotated by a shaft and pinion 29. In Fig. 3 a piston 23<a> is screwed into a guide member 23b and rotated therein by a rack 4. In a four-stroke engine, if springs are interposed in the joints, adjustment will be limited to take place during the suction and exhaust periods.
