719,392. Two-stroke engines; driving-gear. WORTHINGTON, V. G. Sept. 10, 1952 [Oct. 11, 1951], No. 23645/51. Class: 7(2) In a double-acting two-stroke engine comprising rack D, Fig. 1, integral with the piston, two pinions E, F, Fig. 2, two bevel pinions G, H, and a bevel gear K on the output shaft L, each piston stroke is transmitted to the shaft L through the rack, one pinion, one bevel pinion and the bevel gear. The piston of the double-acting twostroke engine comprises a tubular member with a central transverse partition A, Fig. 1, which piston reciprocates in an annular space formed between junk heads C and the casing B. Each of the pinions E, F, Fig. 2, is toothed on one half of its periphery only and is secured to a hollow shaft that has one of the bevel pinions G or H fixed thereto, both shafts being rotatable on a fixed shaft J; the bevel pinions G, H each engage the bevel gear K on the shaft L. The smooth and toothed parts of pinions E, F, are oppositely arranged so that only one pinion actually meshes with the rack at any given time. Ports P, R, Fig. 1, are provided in the piston and casing B for inlet and exhaust purposes whilst an opening T in each junk head provides a mounting for a spark plug or fuel injector; the fuel or mixture is fed into the engine by an engine-driven supercharger (not shown).
