Abstract

560,332. Valves. LOVITT, C. Oct. 7, 1942, No. 14076. [Class 7 (vi)] The cylinder head of a two-stroke engine is provided with a rotary valve 14 which is coaxial with the cylinder 10 and formed with two or more passages 15 extending completely through the valve to open the cylinder to inlet ports and sparking plugs disposed alternately in the cylinder head, the passages registering successively with the ports and plugs and forming part of the combustion space which exhausts through a port or ports 32 disposed near the end of the outstroke of the piston 11. The valve 14, which is of greater diameter than the cylinder 10, is held in a lower cylinderhead portion 12 by split rings 17 and an upper portion 13 in which the inlet ports and sparking plugs are provided and which also houses a shaft 18 integral with the valve and rotatably mounted in thrust bearings 27, 28, the valve and shaft being driven by a gear 21 meshing with teeth 19 extending from the periphery of the valve into a recess 20 in the lower head portion 12.
