Valve - gear.-In engines using a hypocycloidal driving-gear, a lay shaft 29 is used to balance the side thrust on the push-rods. This shaft is driven at half crank-shaft speed and is used as the cam and propeller shaft. With sets of engines arranged side by side, the lay shaft may be placed between the sets.
