Abstract

109,646. Birrell, W., and Birrell, J. Sept. 18, 1916. Toothed wheels and pinions.-The inlet and outlet ports of a four-stroke cycle internal-combustion engine are controlled by a pair of split concentric sleeve valves 14, 15 which rotate in opposite directions at one-fourth the speed of the crank shaft. The valves are serrated at their upper edges, as at 19 to engage corresponding serrations on the undersides of a pair of worm wheels 20<1>, 21<1> the teeth of which are oppositely inclined to engage a common worm wheel 22, Fig. 3, having broken teeth.
