Abstract
213,322. Newbery, W. Dec. 22, 1922. Valves. -- A sleeve valve b for a four-stroke engine is fcrmed with main inlet ports b<1> at the lower end and exhaust ports b<2> at the upper end co-operating with inlets a<1> and exhaust ports a<2> arranged in the cylinder at a less distance apart than the ports b<1>, b<2>. Supplementary inlet ports c<1> in the cylinder co-operate with ports c<2> in the sleeve. Both inlets may be for gas, or one gas and the other air. Valve gear. - The sleeve is actuated by an eccentric or crank j arranged so that its connecting-rod i points towards the crank shaft. The rod i may be directly connected to a lug d on the valve, but a link f and radius arm h are preferably used; or the radius arm may be formed as a toothed quadrant engaging a rack on the valve.
