Abstract

116,149. Baily, A. H. May 31, 1917. Propelling.-In driving-mechanism for aircraft propellers comprising a pair of engines coupled together, two engines A, B, Fig. 1, drive propeller shafts J, J' through clutches C, D, chain gearing E, E<1>, shafts G, G<1>, and chain gearing I, I<1>, and are coupled together by gearing K, K<1>. One element of each clutch C, D is made of ratchet form, as shown in Fig. 8, to allow one engine to overrun the other. In modifications, the two engines are placed side by side, and their parallel shafts are geared together and each drives a propeller shaft through bevel or chain gearing. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 19824/09, 6047/13, and 10211/14.
