Abstract

9138. Day, P. C., and Falk, Co. June 22. Reversing-gearing.-Relates to helical or other toothed gearing for use with rolling-mills, for driving ships' propellers from turbines, and for other purposes, in which the separate gear members of each two sets of transmission gearing are connected together by flexible means to ensure even distribution of the load. The driving-gear 1 gears with intermediate gears 2, connected by rotarily flexible shafts 11 to gears 4 gearing with the driving-gear 6. The shafts may be secured directly to one end of the gears 2 and by couplings 9 allowing axial movement to the gears-4. In the form shown, however, forward or reverse drive may be obtained and two supplementary sets of gears 12, 13, gearing with the gears 2 and the driven gear G, are provided. By means of clutches 8, the shafts 11 may be connected to the gears 2 or 12 according as forward or reverse speed is required. Instead of the tension shafts 11, flexible couplings in which spiral springs are connected to pins on plates carried by the gears are employed.
