Abstract
19,063. Ferguson, W., and Ferguson, D. R. Aug. 22. [Addition to 22,759/09.] Reversing-gearing. - Relates to reversing- gearing, suitable for marine propulsion, of the type comprising a coned clutch member C secured to a driving-shaft B and connected to a toothed gear E', a corresponding member D secured to a driven shaft A and connected to a gear E, and planetary gears E<2> meshing with the gears E, E<1> and connected to a coned member H adapted to engage a coned surface J<1> inside a casing J. Instead of, as in the parent Specification, moving the shaft A longitudinally to bring the member D into engagement with the member C, for direct driving, or the member H into engagement with the member J<1>, then fixed, for reversed driving, the casing J is slid longitudinally relatively to the gearing on fixed guide bars M. The casing J is moved by a hand-wheel, a screw, springs, and a lever. The shaft A and the gearing are held in place by bolts S extending from fixed brackets N through the casing J to a thrust bearing O. Alternatively, the casing J may be fixed, and the gearing and shaft A may be slid longitudinally by means of the bolts S and bearing O.
