577,438. Reversing gearing. HINDMARCH, T. March 1, 1944, No. 3858. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An arrangement of reversing gearing for two or more prime movers driving a common output shaft, for example, the propeller shaft of a ship, comprises separate forward and reverse drive gear units for each prime mover. In the Fig., four such units are shown with input shafts c', c', c<3>, c<4>, and output shafts d<1>, d', d<3>, d<4>, driving through gearing l, m, a main output shaft b. Each gear unit comprises fixed gears g, h on the input shaft, the first meshing directly with a loose gear f on the driven shaft and the second meshing with a loose gear e through a reverse idler (not shown). Pressure oil-operated friction clutches i, k of the type described in Specifications 382,865 or 438,563 are utilised for clutching either of the loose gears e, f to their shafts for reverse and forward driving respectively. Any one or more of the power units may be selected for driving, the others remaining in neutral gear with both clutches inoperative. Means are preferably provided to ensure that the clutches of the selected driving units are all engaged for the correct direction of rotation The separate gear units are preferably mounted upon, or contained within, the main output shaft housing as shown but may be separate and connected to the main output shaft by external shafts and flexible couplings. Pairs of the gear unit output shafts d<1>, d<2>, and d<3>, d<4> may be coupled together for a common drive on to the main output shaft and the main gearing m, l may also include an additional forward and reverse gear unit. Each gear unit may comprise more than one forward and reverse speed.
