Abstract

Controlling variable-speed gearing ; free-wheel clutches.-A friction clutch E connecting the driving and driven shafts A', a' of a speed gear of the countershaft type is actuated by a centrifugal governor F mounted on the driven shaft, so that a direct drive is established when the driven shaft reaches a predetermined speed. The governor comprises weighted levers 10 pressing on a flange 6<1> of the clutch member E', which slides on the shaft a<1>. A low-speed gear wheel d and a reversing-wheel H<1>, which is connected to its pinion H through an idler, drive the shaft a<1> through free-wheel clutches consisting of rollers r, Fig. 2, engaging cam surfaces 16 on a member g keyed to the shaft. The rollers are held by a cage consisting of side plates g<1> which can rotate relatively to the member g to an extent limited by a pin-and-slot connection 40, 41. A sliding dog-clutch member I connects the pinions D or H to the countershaft a, or occupies a neutral intermediate position.
