438,004. Variable-speed gearing; epicyclic gearing. JENKINSON, W., 3, Albany Terrace, Trooper Lane, Halifax, Yorkshire. May 10, 1935, No. 13741. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear comprises a swash plate b' which oscillates cranks b 9 which transmit drive through ratchet clutches to equidistant bevel wheels G meshing continuously with a bevel wheel H connected directly, or through an epicyclic multiplying gear h<4>, F, K, to the driven shaft L. The arrangement is such that the strokes of the cranks overlap to produce a continuous drive. In the form shown, the driving member B of the swash plate carries a roller b<7> engaging the inclined surface of a disc c, which is loose on the driving shaft A, and which is moved axially to tilt the member B to vary the speed-ratio. The disc c is connected through a thrust bearing c<3> to a sleeve c<2> splined at c<4> to the casing, and axially movable by an internally-screwed bevel wheel c<5> actuated by a hand wheel, not shown. The member b' of the swashplate carries three pins b<8> engaging the cranks b<9> which are integral with three discs b<10> supported on pivots fixed in the casing. Each disc b<10> is connected to its bevel wheel G through the freewheel clutch b<20>, shown in Fig. 6. To prevent over-running, one or more of the discs b<10> are connected to the bevel wheels G by epicyclic gearing, Figs. 6 and 8. Pins n<1> projecting from the disc b<10> carry planets n meshing with a sun N on the wheel G, and drive a loose internally-toothed ring n<2> at increased speed. The ring n<2> drives interengaging planets b<17>, b<16> mounted on pins b<18>, b<14> projecting from a ring b<19> secured to the wheel G. The planets b<16> are rigid with gears b<13> meshing with a sun b<12> on the disc b<10>. The relative speeds of the disc b<10> and gear G are thus determined.
