Abstract

592,713. Reversing; pumps. HARPER, W. A., and REBBECK, SIR F. E. March 20, 1945, No. 6962. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v)] A blower drive for a reversible engine including a slipping clutch 17, which allows the blower to continue to revolve under its own momentum when stopping the engine, and means to cause it to be driven in the same direction when the engine is reversed. The blower 2 is driven from the engine crankshaft 4 through chain gearing 5, 7, a shaft 6, and a speed-increasing gear and clutches in a casing 3. Parallel shafts 10, 11, Fig. 3, which are driven in the same direction by a gear wheel 9, drive the shaft 16 connected to the blower through alternatively engaged hydraulic couplings 14, 15. The supply of fluid to the couplings is controlled by the engine reversing lever so that when the direction of rotation of the shaft 6 is reversed the drive is through coupling 15 and gears 19, 18 causing the direction of rotation of the shaft 16 to remain unchanged. The supply of fluid to the further hydraulic coupling 17 is controlled by the engine "stop" lever through a valve which is reciprocated so that the supply to the coupling 17 is cut off and both couplings are drained, when the lever is put into the " stop " position, which is the first action to be taken when reversing the engine. The blower then continues to rotate under its own momentum. A chamber, or length of piping, between the valve and the coupling ensures sufficient lag in the engagement of the couplings in succession.
