Abstract

786,338. Variable-speed gearing. LEVERSTART, Ltd., and SWEET, C. W. March 31, 1955, No. 9466/55. Class 80 (2). A slipping clutch variable-speed gearing comprises a driving clutch plate 17 and driven partannular plates 27, the latter being pivoted at 28 to a sleeve 23 splined to the driven shaft 19 so that they can be pivoted so as to bring a greater or less area of their friction faces into engagement with the plate 17 so as to vary the speed ratio by varying the amount of slip. The plates 27 are also connected by links 35 to another sleeve 24 splined to the driven shaft 19. A compression spring 39 between the sleeves 23, 24 urges the clutch surfaces into engagement. The plates 27 have a friction lining 30 backed by an asbestos packing 29 and are pivoted by moving the sleeve 24 axially by a control member 43. As shown, two variablespeed gears are controlled by the member 43 to produce a reverse gear transmission as described in Specification 786,339.
