Abstract

424,176. Epicyclic variable speed gearing; lubricating toothed gearing. WOLSELEY MOTORS, (1927), Ltd., and BODEN, O., Drews Lane, Ward End, Birmingham. Sept. 29, 1934, No. 27915. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] Epicyclic variable-speed gearing of any form has its gear members housed within a closed casing to which oil is supplied under pressure sufficient to maintain a film of oil between the operating surfaces of the intermeshing gear teeth. In the form shown, triple planets 5, 7, 8 are carried in a closed carrier drum 11 and mesh respectively with a sun 4 on a driving-shaft 2, a sun 13 on a driven shaft 3, and a loose sun 14 connected by a sleeve 15 to a clutch drum 16. Pumped oil from a pipe 19 passes in through an aperture 21 in a sleeve 22 and through an opening 23 in the shaft 2 then along a clearance 24 in the tubular shaft 2 and out through a passage 25 which discharges into a space between adjacent teeth of the gear 4. The oil thus passes freely into the revoluble drum 11 containing the gear wheels, accumulating there under pressure, so that these wheels work noiselessly. First and second speeds are effected by applying brakes 12, 17 to the gear drum 11 and to the clutch drum 16, respectively. Third or top speed is effected by engaging a plate clutch 18 which connects the drums 11, 16 together.
