Abstract

470,392. Reversing-gearing. BRADBURY, J. H., and RUSSELL, F. C. Dec. 13, 1935, Nos. 34565/35 and 33644/36. [Class 80 (ii)] Reversing-gearing comprises alternativelyengaged friction members carried by a doubleacting piston thrust in two directions by pressure oil. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 15, the friction members are the coneclutch ends of a two part drum 87 which slides on driving pins 90 passing through a wheellike carrier 88 rigid on a driven shaft 89. Internal clutch cones 85, 86 are driven constantly in opposite directions, the one directly from a drive shaft 84, and the other through a countershaft 92 and toothed and chain or like. trains 93, 94. For forward driving, pressure oil is delivered into a chamber C through a passage 95 in the shaft 89 so that the drum 87 engages the cone 85. For reversed driving, the chamber C is exhausted and the oil is delivered to the other chamber D. In an adaptation to planetary reversing gearing shown in Fig. 6, there are two separately-movable pistons 28, 29 and each carries a friction clutch and a brake. These pistons 28, 29 slide on driving pins 68 on a carrier 17 which is the carrier of the planetary reversing pinions, not shown. To drive reversely, the carrier 17 is held against rotation by admitting pressure oil simultaneouslv to outer chambers 50, whereby the pistons 28, 29 are thrust towards one another so as to bring brake surfaces 66, 67 upon them into engagement with a fixed double cone 37. To drive forwardly, the gear train is clutched solid by admitting the oil to inner chambers 25, whereby the pistons 28, 29 are thrust apart so as to bring clutch surfaces 33, 34 upon them into engagement with internal clutch cones 15, 16 fast on driving and driven shafts respectively. A complete gear device including the oil passages and manual distributing valve is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown), and there is described with reference to Fig. 8 (not shown) means by which the pressure oil can be used to hold against rotation the driven clutch cone 16 of Fig. 6, when the gearing is not driving.
