Abstract
798,840. Vehicle driving and steering gear. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Nov. 21, 1956 [Aug. 23, 1955], No. 24280/55. Class 79(2) [Also in Group XXIV] Relates to two friction clutches, having a common driving member, alternatively or together engaged by oil under pressure (see Group XXIV). The clutches are described applied to a planetary changespeed gear associated with steering mechanism for a tracked vehicle. An engine shaft 1 drives through a gear 2 to a gear 3 fast with a cylinder 5 and clutches 9, 10 constructed according to the invention. The clutch 9 drives through a shaft 13a to a sun gear 13 meshed by planet pinions 16 rotating upon a driven carrier 19 fast with a driven shaft 19a. The clutch 10 drives through a shaft 12a to a sun gear 12 meshing planet pinions 15 fast with the planet pinions 16, the planet pinions 15 themselves meshing through idlers (not shown) with an internally toothed annulus which can be stationed by engagement of a brake B3. The planet pinions 16 engage with internal teeth in a drum 21 which can be stationed by application of a brake B1, this drum carrying planet pinions 17 meshing with a sun gear 14 stationed by engagement of a brake B2, and also meshing with internal teeth on the driven planet carrier 19. The gearing gives five forward and two reverse ratios. The output shaft 19a of the gear drives an internally toothed annulus 28 meshed by two sets of planet pinions 42, 42 each mounted upon a carrier 41 fast with a final output shaft 43, 43. The planet pinions 42 also mesh with sun gears 30, 30 on sleeves 40, 40 driven through idle gears 38, 38 from gears 37, 37 on shafts 35, 36 at opposite sides of a differential 34. The differential is driven from the engine shaft 1 through a reversing bevel gear 32. Brakes 45 are selectively applied to steer the tracked vehicle. A transmission brake RB can be applied to station the driven shaft 19a of the planetary gear. Specification 567,635 is referred to.
