Abstract

401,058. Centrifugal fans. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., VIALE, S. M., and PRIOR, D. L., Park Side, Coventry. July 13, 1932, No. 19801. [Class 110 (i).] A two-speed speeding-up gear suitable for driving superchargers upon aircraft yields ratios closer together than does the arrangement of Specification 335,250, [Class 110 (i), Centrifugal and screw fans &c.]. The invention comprises triple planets 28, 29, 30, Fig. 1, in a loose carrier 18 which is held fast by a brake 34 for the higher speed. Since the engine crank-shaft 11 drives the pinion 28 through an internally-toothed gear 14, a sun gear 32 on the spindle 22 of the fan is driven reversely to the crank-shaft. To effect the lower speed, the brake 34 is released, whereupon a sun gear 41 meshing with the pinion 30 is engaged by a detent 42 and kept from rotating in the same direction as the crank-shaft, so that it forms a fulcrum by which the sun gear 32 is driven at a slower speed in the same direction as before, that is, reversely to the crank-shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a centrifugal clutch 31 is arranged inside so as to drive the large planetary gear 29 as described in Specification 129,030, [Class 80 (i), Gearing, Belt &c.], and the brake 34 is applied by fluid pressure pistons 37 as described in Specification 350,629. Between the crank-shaft 11 and a disc 12 leading to the gear 14 is a floating toothed driving-ring 13 described in Specification 256,718, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.]. Means for reducing shocks are interposed between the disc 12 and the gear 14 comprising tangential coil springs 15, Fig. 4, between lugs 16 on the rim of the disc 12 and lugs 17 on the outer edge of the gear 14.
