Variable-speed gearing comprises a number of toothed or chain gears 1, 2, 3 adapted to be. selectively clutched to a driving or driven shaft 4. In the boss of each gear is an expanding friction clutch 10, 11, 12, and the selector means slides within the shaft 4. This means consists of a cam-sleeve 31 movable as a whole by toothed gearing 38, 32 within which sleeve slides a cam plunger 39 for operating the selected clutch. Rollers 30 set in the wall of the sleeve 31 are brought into the plane of a clutch and there engage the inner ends of radial wedge plungers 14 which expand the clutch segments 11 &c. Subsequent movement to the left of plunger 39 thrusts out the rollers and clutch plungers. This clutch-engaging movement may be effected through a pair of pedals 47 and screw-and-nut gearing 44<1> and a thrust bearing 43. The rack 32 is adapted to let the sleeve 31 turn within it.
