Abstract

201,165. Matteucci, R. July 18, 1922, [Convention date]. Controlling variable-speed gear; reversing-gearing.-A gear member 10 is moved to and held in two extreme gear positions by two co-operating doubly-inclined parts 14, 17. The parts 14 are in the shape of a ring surrounding the parts 17, which are in the shape of teeth upon a set of pivoted levers 16 spring-pressed outwards by a sliding cone 18. The teeth 17 are wedging the member 10 towards the right. To effect change, striking-means engaging a groove 12 thrusts the member 10 positively towards the left. The ring 14 thrusts the levers 16 inwards, the teeth 17 riding up until they engage a groove 15 in a cylindrical part of the ring. This is neutral position. Further movement towards the left brings the other sides of the teeth 17 into action to complete the changing movement. The invention is described as applied to reversing-gearing, the member 10 carrying friction rollers 6 engaging a gear 7 on a driving-shaft 8, and a split internal gear 4 wedged into a cone 2 secured to a driven shaft 3. The levers 16 are pivoted upon the cone 2 and the split gear 4 is connected through a disc 5 and rod 21 to the collar 20 against which the main spring 19 abuts, with the effect that the thrust of this spring tends to wedge the friction gearing into close engagement. This pressure may be supplied by a fluid, by electricity, or by gravity, and the tooth levers may be replaced by balls, rollers, pins or the like.
