Toothed gearing. - In double - reduction doublehelical gearing, the secondary pinion 6 gearing with the driven wheel 10 is splined at its centre 7 to engage the primary gear-wheel 8, which is supported in a bearing 9. The primary pinion 4 is connected to the driving-shaft by a flexible coupling 2. Axial movement of all the gears to equalize tooth pressures is thus permitted. The front and back faces 16, 17 of the splines are connected respectively by passages 11, 13 and 12, 14 to a valve 18 controlling the passage of oil from a pump 15. The valve is controlled automatically so that oil under pressure is supplied either to the faces 16 or 17 according to the direction of drive by a ring secured frictionally on the driven shaft and carrying a lug striking against Jugs on the valve spindle 19. Oil-retaining plates 25, 26 are secured to the gear-wheel 8.
