Abstract

458,172. Variable - speed gearing. KRISTOFFERSEN, O., 35, Ullevalsveien, Oslo, Norway. March 8, 1935, Nos. 7358 and 7359. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 10, 1935]. [Class 80 (ii)] Variable-speed gearing comprises a planetary train P controlled by an hydraulic generator G delivering to a motor M which drives the driven shaft 13. The driving-element is a sleeve 7 which carries planet gears 8 meshing with a sun gear 10 and an annulus 12. The gear 10 drives only a central member 20 of the generator G. The annulus 12 drives to a carrier 16 of generator members 21 and beyond that to the driven shaft 13. Relative screwing of the generator parts 20, 21 drives oil through passages 27, and valves 33 to the motor M causing the motor parts 23, 24 to turn while the oil escapes to a chamber 36 whence it passes back through a pipe 37 to a chamber 38 at the inlet end of the generator G. This happens so long as valves 33 are open. The valves 33 are closed by a governor 48 responsive to the speed of the shaft 13. There is preferably a governor for each of the valves 33 which are closed in succession. To disconnect the drive, a master valve 44 is opened by hand.
