Abstract
213,421. Osborn, A. E. March 15, 1923. Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which a cone of toothed gears 71 - - 78 are alternatively driven by a pinion 30 slidable on a driving-shaft 20 is modified so that lateral thrust is not imparted to that shaft and so that change of mesh is facilitated. The end of the shaft 20 remote from the engine clutch 11 is unsupported, lateral thrust being taken by a carriage 35 which embraces the pinion and slides in a fixed guideway in a casing 45. The carriage 35 is operated through a rod 21 and spring striking-means 22, which coacts with a spaced-cam bar 28 for disconnecting the clutch 11 prior to making a new engagement of gear teeth. This bar is knocked up by a bowl 24 on the striker, so operating a clutch lever 12. Specification 213,021 is referred to.
