Abstract

536,502. Variable-speed gearing. SINGER MOTORS, Ltd., and SHORTER, L. J. March 15, 1940, No. 4840. [Class 80 (ii)] In a three speed variable speed gear of the lay-shaft type, the third and second speeds are introduced by a synchronizing device 16, and the first speed by a gear 20 which is slidable on the driven shaft into mesh with a pinion 21, fast on the layshaft 14 at the end thereof remote from the driving end, reverse speed being obtained by an idler 23, which meshes with the gears 20, 21 when the latter are not directly meshed with one another. As shown, the synchronizing device 16 is a double acting clutch of known form, the gear 20 is operated by a swinging fork 22, and the idler gear 23 is moved by a sliding fork rod 24 and swinging lever 25. The gear box may be as described in Specification 536,503. The invention may be adapted to include a hydraulic control for an auxiliary overdriven epicyclic gear as described in Specification 536,504.
