270,696. DestrÚe, J. May 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Variable-speed gearing comprises a tumbler pinion 5 adapted to mesh alternatively with steps 2, 3, 4 upon a toothed cone carried by a driving-shaft 1. The steps 2, 3, 4 are connected by eccentric toothed paths 7, 7<1> to facilitate speed change. The tumbler 5 is geared to a feathered driven shaft 6 and is carried by a frame 8 which is pivoted to that shaft and is guided by cam or spring means to maintain proper mesh. Speed changed are effected by connecting a fork 1) to one or other cam 14 or 15 upon a drum 16 geared to the shaft 1. This connection is effected by thrusting a pin 12 or a pin 13 into engagement with the cam, which may be done from an engine-driven governor with suitable connections. In a modification, the pins 12, 13 are carried by a rotary barrel connected by a rack and pinion to the striking fork.
