Abstract

498,359. Variable - speed gearing. GREGOIRE, P. J. Jan. 15, 1938, No. 1389. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1937. [Class 80 (ii)] Automatically-variable epicyclic gearing comprises a pair of planet pinions 5, 6 carried by a driven (or driving) member 2 and meshing with a driving (or driven) annulus 1, the pinions having crank arms 7, 8 which are of different lengths but which are always parallel to each other. The cranks are connected by rods 15, 16 to points 13, 14 on a lever 12 pivoted to one end 11 of a lever 10 pivoted on the member 2. A spring 17 is interposed between the other end of the lever 10 and an adjustable abutment 18 on the member 2. As relative movement between the members 1 and 2 takes place, the lever 10 oscillates about its pivot 9, producing alternate stressing and releasing of the spring 17. The parts are so dimensioned that the oscillation of the lever 10 is of small amplitude, that maximum stress of the spring occurs when the rods 15, 16 are approximately at right-angles to their crank arms, and that minimum stress occurs when the rods are in line with their crank arms.
