Abstract

370,558. Variable-speed gearing. GALE, F. G. L., 30, Burns Buildings, Holloway, London. Feb. 10, 1931, No. 4093. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises driving and driven elements A, B connected by planets C supported in a loose drum D with a sine-curve groove M in its periphery. The groove M is engaged by the end of a pendulum lever E which is free to oscillate in the plane of Fig. 1 along with a pivot bar J of square section. The bob of the pendulum is a weight F slidable along the lever E and connected by a link G, Fig. 2, to a block H slidable on the bar J by a control lever L. A drive is transmitted when the free rotation of the drum is restrained by the inertia of the oscillating pendulum governor, and the restraining effect, and hence the speed ratio, is adjusted by moving the block H.
