235,815. Holmes, G. E. March 7, 1925. Addition to 232,437. Automatic gear control. - The change-speed gear and the clutch are automatically operated according to the gradient by a pair of weighted arms 1, 2 swinging loosely on a pin 3 carrried by a casing 4 fixed to some part of the vehicle. Teeth 18 on the lower ends of the arms engage a pawl 19 carried by the casing. When the vehicle is on a gradient and the casing consequently rotates, the arm 1 at first swings with the casing but the arm 2 is stated to remain vertical and one of its teeth acts on the pawl 19 and disengages the latter from the arm 1. The arm 1 then swings back to the vertical position and in doing so rotates a shaft 5 through bevel gear 20 and operates the change-speed gear and clutch rod 12 by means of an eccentric 7 on the shaft. Each tooth on the arm 1 corresponds to one ratio of gearing of the change-speed gear. The casing 4 is connected to a fixed part of the vehicle by a sleeve 9 and can be rotatable adjusted relatively to this sleeve by means of a locking arm 8.
