348,913. Change-speed gearing. TRIUMPH CYCLE CO., Ltd. and SYKES, A. A., Priory Street, Coventry. June 7, 1930, No. 17720. [Class 80 (ii).] In four-speed gearing having a fixed gear 26 at one end of a lay shaft 20 and a free gear 21 at the other end in constant mesh with gears 4, 8 fast on driving and driven shafts 2, 6, and having also between these pairs further constant.mesh pairs 14, 29 and 12, 27, of which latter each gear is movable axially into clutch engagement with the adjacent end gear, such clutch engagement is effected in each case by the gear teeth of one of the gears. Thus the gear teeth of gears 4, 29, 12, 21 are used as clutch teeth. In changing, the gears 14, 12 are moved together to left and right to produce two speeds, and the gears 29, 27, to produce the other two speeds. The gears 14, 12 have grooves 18, 17 on their adjacent ends for engagement with one striker, and the gears 29, 27 similar adjacent grooves 31, 32. In a modification, the gear 12 is larger than the gear 8 so that the highest geared drive is effected through the end gear pairs which may have helical teeth. A modification suitable for motor-cycles is described with a kick-starter acting on the lay shaft.
