Abstract

412,170. Change - speed gearing ; clutches. VERITY, C. H., 19, Connaught Road, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Nov. 19, 1932, No. 32794. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing comprises spring clutch dogs 20, Fig. 1, slidable in grooves in a hollow shaft 14 which is thus driven alternatively from loose gears 7<1>, 81, 91, 10<1> with clutch bosses constantly in mesh with toothed or chain gears 7, 8, 9, 10 fast on a driving-shaft 5 driven from the shaft 2 of an engine arranged crosswise say, upon a vehicle. The dogs 20 are supported on a bar 13 with swells which disengage a main clutch C and so interrupt the drive at each speed change. This main clutch comprises radial bores 22, Fig. 2, in a solid disc rigid with the shaft 14. In the bores 22 slide pistons 19 with bowl ends engaging the undulating inner surface 23 of a clutch disc 16, Fig. 1, rigid with a hollow propeller shaft 15 which, through skew gearing, drives a differential 18. A pump 25 on the shaft 5 draws oil from the sump and pumps it into the central bore A of the propeller shaft. Some of this oil is drawn into the radial bores 22, Fig. 2, as the piston springs 34 expand and is trapped there by valves 21 closing behind it The main clutch C is then in condition to transmit the drive. When the bar 13 is moved to change speed, as by means of a rod 30 acting against a spring 26, one of the swells on the bar strikes the valves 21 outwards, opening them, so that the pistons 19 reciprocate freely and the main clutch C is disabled. When the dogs 20 of the change-speed clutch engage for a new speed, the valves 21 reclose and the main clutch transmits the drive. Reversed driving is effected through an idler 11.
